You will ALWAYS get what you’re looking for

How you see the world shapes your reality.

Imagine you’re walking through a busy mall.

There are crowds of people walking past talking and every shop has different music playing.

If you tried to take it all in, every face, every conversation, every song, you’d go insane.

There’s too much information for you to take in all at once.

Instead, you place a filter over the world.

You only see, hear, and feel what’s relevant to you at the time, or what’s on your mind.

Like the person you’re having a conversation with.

There are different levels to this filter.

One is what I described above, which we’ll call the micro filter, which helps you focus on what’s immediately important.

The other is the macro filter. The macro filter is how you see the world as a whole.

We’re going to focus on the macro.

What Most People Are Like

How you see the world is shaped by your macro and micro filters.

Your micro filter changes from moment to moment.

If you’re at a coffee shop to work, you’re focused on your work.

If you’re there to socialise, you’re focused on the people.

Your macro filter on the other hand is slow to change.

It doesn’t change on a case-by-case basis and it’s typically years in the making.

Your past experiences and perceptions of them shape your macro filter.

The problem we all face is we’re wired to see the negative.

It’s better for us to think a bush rustling means a tiger is about to jump out at us than for us to see a bush shaking and think it’s the wind, only for a tiger to jump out and eat us.

But after years of maintaining that mindset, all we see is problems.

And problems are all we end up running into.

The Problem With Most People

The world for most people appears to be full of problems, whilst for some, it's full of opportunities.

In other words, pessimists versus optimists.

I, like most people, am a natural pessimist.

I realised that seeing the problem in things was getting me nowhere.

It kept me safe, and for most people, that’s enough, but it wasn’t enough for me.

If you’re reading this, your basic needs have probably been met and I highly doubt a tiger will attack you on your way to work or school.

The world has changed, and we’re no longer faced with the problem of surviving, but a problem of thriving.

To survive, we must seek and avoid problems.

To thrive, we must seek and entertain opportunities.

The world remains the same; opportunities and problems are present, but if you’re filtering to see problems, it's difficult to notice the opportunities.

If, like me, you’re done being negative and want to open yourself up to opportunities, all you need to do is change your filter.

The Solution

To change your filter, be more positive.

It sounds simple, but really, it’s a lot of work.

You can’t simply click your fingers and become more positive, it a whole process.

And the easiest place to start is by changing what you consume.

If you watch the news and listen to sad songs all day, the world will appear dark and hopeless.

So instead of consuming things that reaffirm how you feel, consume things that make you feel how you want to feel whilst avoiding negativity.

Change what you watch, who you follow, what you read, and even the people you surround yourself with.

These small changes will change your worldview over time.

And as your macro filter changes, you’ll begin to see things in a new light.

Conclusion

If you look for obstacles, you will only see obstacles.

If you look for a path, you will see a path.

The world is the same, the obstacles and the path are both there.

You get to decide what you run into.
